Cannon Resigns After Corruption Accusations

Mayor Patrick Cannon of Charlotte, N.C., surrendered after just 114 days in office on Wednesday night after he was captured on federal corruption allegations that he accepted a huge amount of dollars from undercover agents, itself in his office.

A five-term Democratic Chairman Pro Tem Michael Bane, part of the City Council, instantly gets to be leader of a flourishing city that is greater than Boston, Washington, Atlanta, D.C and Denver

Cannon was discharged on $25,000 bond pending his accusation on Wednesday at a short hearing before U.S. Justice Judge David Keesler in Charlotte. He wouldn't comment as he exited the courthouse on Wednesday.

If convicted for each of the three counts of bribery and theft, wire duplicity, and coercion, he could confront as long as 50 years in federal jail and fines up to $1.5 million, the U.S. The lawyer's office said in one of his statements.
In an affidavit given along with a 46-page criminal dissension (PDF), the FBI unveiled that it started researching Cannon in August 2010, when he was a part of the City Council and Charlotte's chairman pro tem.

Through the following three or more years, the FBI claims, Cannon requested and acknowledged bribes of about $48,000 in money and different positions — including, utilization of a luxury apartment, a hotel room and an airline ticket — from undercover agents acting like businessmen and speculators.

Those agents requested for favors from city zoning, planning and permitting authorities — who are exceptionally powerful in Charlotte, one of the South's greatest business and commercial business centers.

At least one time, Cannon has taken bribes in the mayor’s office itself and took about $20,000 in a leather briefcase according to the report on 21st February
