42 Refugees Drowned at Yemen Coast


Gulf of Aden- Late on Sunday evening, about 42 illegal African refugees drowned near the coast of Bir Ali, when their boast turned upside down.

This incident occurred near Gulf of Aden off the Yemen’s Southern coast in the Shabwa province. The defense ministry commented briefly that the boat “overturned off the coast of Bir Ali,” full of African migrants.

It is generally reported that Africans, especially Ethiopians and Somalis, seek refuge in order to escape poverty and scarcity at home and illegally enter the borders of Saudi frontier while passing through southern Yemen. A security official reported the incident to the AFP.

At least 30 of the victims of the boat incident were saved by a Yemeni naval patrol and took them to a refugee camp in the town of Mayfaa.

According to reports, hundreds of African every year drowns in such episode while trying to reach Gulf countries and Europe passing through Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea. Also, according to the International Organization for Migration, about 84,000 people from African countries entered into Yemen in 2012, to find jobs in Gulf countries.
