International Politics News,
RAMALLAH - Mahmud Abbas, the Palestinian President, was to hold a meeting with Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal in Doha on Monday for the 1st meeting since their adverse movements marked a surprise annuity contract.
On Sunday, Mahmud Abbas had to take a flight towards Doha, the Capital of Qatar, in order to meet the ex-Hamas leader emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on Monday, after he attended one of the family’s weddings.
He would then convene with the expelled Hamas leader who has been based in Doha for more than 2 years after leaving his preceding base in Damascus due to the violence enthralling Syria.
It was in January, 2013, when the last time the two leaders met face-to-face was in Cairo.
Hamas bureaucrats had said at the weekend that the 2 leaders were likely to meet in Qatar in the upcoming days.
Abbas's Fatah lobby group, which controls the Palestine Liberation Organization and regulates the West Bank, has been locked in years of astringent rivalry with Meshaal's Hamas since the Islamist movement by force took over the Gaza Strip in 2007, throwing out the forces loyal to the head of the country.
Former efforts to broker a political resolution have botched, but on April 23, the PLO and Hamas proclaimed that they had reached a contract under which they would work jointly to form a new administration of political independents.
News of the deal aggravated an aggravated response from Israel, which stated it would not talk with any Palestinian administration backed by Hamas, putting the last nail in the sarcophagus of the newest round of peace talks.
